Selecting Keywords That Attract Traffic For Low Cost SEO
Implementing Low Cost SEO processes involves thoughtful research into keywords to ultimately bring real increases in web traffic. Keyword research is one of these processes that identifies terms or phrases that will attract attention and have the potential to generate new traffic. Keyword planning then is a highly creative and valuable endeavor that can make the difference between a highly successful web enterprise and one that struggles.
The World Wide Web is the primary tool used by prospective consumers to research products and services prior to purchase. It is important to understand then how users would search for one’s products and services using the internet and how they would describe the need or problem they are looking to solve. Major companies pay a great deal of money to better understand consumer behavior on this level, but a little intuition and research can accomplish much the same for a small enterprise.
Common language use relating to the goods and services provided is an important first step. What are the exact words or phrases that current customers would use to describe the product or services provided? How would they research information about the products? How important is customer support? These and many other questions are important to understand when building a keyword phrase designed to attract internet customers.
Usually, keywords are grouped into phrases of multiple words to create a keyword phrase or search term. Two or three words in a given phrase are quite useful. As the optimization plan is created, Google and others offer tools to test possible keyword phrases to find out in advance if a theoretical term would attract traffic.
Smaller enterprises must avoid choosing keyword phrases that are dominated by major corporations, though. Phrases such as “hardware distributors” would put a business up against some huge and powerful competitors. Accordingly, the search term should be ‘narrowed’ to avoid these competitive situations.
Narrowing keywords and keyword phrases into meaningful yet productive terms requires an additional strategy.
“Interchangeable” words in the keyword string are highly useful in attracting traffic when words are used in different order within the search term. For example, the search term “Water Utility Consultants” offers the opportunity for a consultant specializing in advising water utility organizations to compete not only for traffic using this term, but also for those using “Utility Consultants” or “Water Utility” within their search term. Here, three carefully selected words offer different keyword combinations that can attract internet readers.
It is also important to include a term that describes where the product or service is available. Especially for smaller enterprises that are competing with larger companies, use a geographic identifier can allow the organization to better compete for local sales. The internet is truly world-wide so it is important to identify where the product or service can be acquired. After all, it doesn’t make sense to appear on searches for “Golf Instruction in Sacramento” when the business is in San Antonio.
Extending the title of blog articles or articles placed within the web page itself is a useful tactic. Keywords that can be easily incorporated into titles make it easier for the search engines to understand what the page is about. Including other words within a long article title expands the ability of the page to attract traffic for other words in addition to the selected keywords.
Consideration of keyword usage in the web traffic plan before implementation can deliver increased traffic without incurring greater expense. Enterprises attempting a growth strategy in the current economy are always cost conscious but still need new customer traffic to increase sales. Keyword research can deliver new customers at reasonable expense.

Online PR – A New Strategy for PR Professionals
Just several years ago, online PR strategy simply involved ensuring client websites were up to date with press material and issuing email newsletters. The internet wasn’t ignored, but magazines and newspapers took precedence and the majority of a PR Executive’s time was spent building relationships with journalists. In just a short amount of time, how things have changed. With the massive online social media explosion, press officers are now tasked with the role of building relationships directly with a group of new ‘content creators’ – the public.
Targeting traditional media will still remain a core part of the PR package – especially for business to business clients. However, undertaking online PR activity is now essential in order to reach the growing number of people that consume their news on the internet. Niche websites, social networking websites and handheld devices all offer the consumer an up-to date, real time alternative to newspapers and magazines.
As a result of this trend, newspaper sales are inevitably declining and it is estimated that up to half of the UK’s regional and local titles will close within the next 5 years. This prediction is supported by the recent news that The Times and Sunday Times Online will be charging 1 per day for its news content from May 2010. Whether this model of charging for online news will work – who knows? But if newspapers are changing their approach, it goes without saying that PR professionals must too.
News stories online allow readers to share, rate, bookmark and comment, which are all actions that present great opportunities for PR people. Social media is becoming increasingly powerful and any professional working in the PR industry today recognises that it should form the backbone of any online communications campaign. Not only does it allow the consumer to share their opinions – it allows businesses to gain valuable feedback and insight.
Whilst online publicity is great for reputation and brand management, its benefits are twofold, because it is ideal for SEO too. E-commerce websites in particular must be as easy to find as possible and online PR is the perfect tool to achieve higher natural search engine rankings.
It’s safe to say that developing an online PR and social media strategy will be the ‘buzz’ for 2010 and as a result, the industry is forming closer ties with the world of new media. This is great for full service agencies, because they have the expertise in-house to offer a first rate, integrated service. PR professionals can no longer just profess to be the ‘words’ people! They need to stay abreast of what’s new online, embrace technology and not be afraid to stray from the traditional PR approach.
